Working smarter and safer with hazardous substances at Zwanenberg Food Group

News   04-28-2025

Zwanenberg Food Group, one of the Netherlands’ largest producers of processed meats, sauces, and meat alternatives, has a clear ambition: to build a safe and sustainable workplace where employee health always comes first. To achieve this, Zwanenberg teamed up with Chemrade Software. With their user-friendly platform and expert support, Chemrade helped Zwanenberg gain consistent insights into daily chemical exposure and the associated risks. The result? A future-proof approach where safe chemical management and sustainability are fully integrated into daily operations.

Strategic Vision Meets Innovative Solution

When Marco Mathu stepped in as Corporate HSE Manager at Zwanenberg in 2023, he launched an investigation into the organization's biggest health and safety risks. “We quickly identified hazardous chemicals as a top priority,” Marco explains. “We use a wide variety of substances — from spicy production ingredients like chili peppers to strong cleaning agents like caustic soda for our production lines. For every one of these substances, we need clear measures to ensure safe handling by our employees.”

The challenge was significant: each production site had its own way of managing hazardous substances. There were Excel lists, binders full of safety sheets — but no centralized system, no structured risk assessments. “We needed a solution that would not only standardize our records but also fit our broader vision of safety and sustainability,” Marco says. After an extensive selection process, Zwanenberg chose Chemrade: “Because of their user-friendly software and deep expertise. We didn’t want just a supplier — we needed a true partner who could think alongside us.”

From Vision to Practice: A Joint Effort

Implementation took place in phases, with Chemrade’s consultants playing an active role throughout. “What stood out,” says Mirjam Jansen-Kok, HSE Specialist, “was how Chemrade completely took the burden off our shoulders. They helped us set up an up-to-date, practical system quickly and efficiently.”

“Their implementation isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach — it’s thoughtful and tailored to your needs,” Mirjam continues. “Their support was exactly what we needed: targeted demos, hands-on training sessions, and intensive coaching. Their philosophy is clear: empower the client to manage independently over time.

The Chemrade team consists of experienced consultants with industrial hygiene backgrounds who provide concrete, practical solutions. Whether it’s a complex risk assessment or a simple question about workplace instruction cards — they always deliver actionable answers that help us grow our expertise.”

Today, all four of Zwanenberg’s Dutch production sites are working with Chemrade. The database covers all hazardous substances — from ingredients to cleaning products — along with every risk assessment and workplace instruction card (WIC). Everything is centralized in one platform. Safety Data Sheets and WICs are easily accessible through the Chemrade Cloud, with each location having its own access link or QR code.

“We are building a workplace where safety and accountability are second nature. Chemrade is helping us bring that vision to life.”

Transformation with Measurable Impact

Rolling out the Chemrade platform has fundamentally changed Zwanenberg’s approach to managing hazardous substances. “Our front door is no longer wide open,” Marco puts it simply. “New products and suppliers now go through a full evaluation first: Is it safe? Is there a safer alternative? This critical approach fits perfectly with our ambition to create a safe, sustainable work environment for our employees.”

“We’ve also learned how to apply exposure models like Stoffenmanager and ECETOC-TRA properly — and when to take the next step toward advanced models like the Advanced REACH Tool within the software,” Mirjam adds. “Chemrade guided us through this complex process with practical tools that are directly usable in our day-to-day operations.”

Looking Ahead: A Partnership for the Future

What started as a project to manage hazardous substances has grown into a strong, long-term partnership. “The people at Chemrade are approachable, listen to our needs, and are always ready to help,” says Marco. The collaboration between Zwanenberg and Chemrade Software shows the power of combining technology, expertise, and personal support. “We are committed to a work environment where safety and responsibility are a natural part of our culture,” Marco concludes. “Chemrade helps us make that ambition a reality.”
